I like to think that I can crack a joke or two, which is why I love reading funny books! There are a lot of books out there that like to market themselves as side-splitters, but where do you even start? I decided to make a collection of the 5 best humor books of all time (that I have read). I left out the popular bookstore front shelf Tina Fey, Amy P, and Mindy Kaling types. Yes, they’re funny as well, but everyone already knows about them. So without further ado, here are the 5 FUNNIEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ / remember at the moment :
A Year in the Merde by Stephen Clark.
If you don’t know by now, my experience living in France was…not perfect, to say the least, so a blunt, honest, painfully true accounts of trying to survive in France really hit home for me. Sure, it’s one of the most romantic cities in the world, BUT THERE’S DOG POOP EVERYWHERE!! HOW DO YOU GUYS NOT SEE THAT?? It baffles me that travel bloggers always seem to forget that no one picks up Fido’s droppings along the Seine.
A Year in the Merde is about a young British man named Paul West who moves to France for a marketing job. It’s a pretty standard plot, and totally relatable. The book was actually first self-published in France, and it was such a hit among Parisians and everyone else who lived in France (yes, there is a difference) that the book went on to be published around the world. If you enjoy it, definitely read the sequels, In the Merde for Love and Dial M for Merde, both which continue West’s adventures in Paris.

Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Friend by Christopher Moore
This was the first humor heavy book I had ever read, back in high school, and still I consider it one of the best. Honestly before this book, I didn’t even know books could be funny. This book changed my life. Why would you even need to go to a comedy show when you could read a book??
Anyways, Lamb is about Jesus Christ’s (yes, that Jesus Christ) best friend, Biff. Jesus and Biff do everything together. Although it isn’t always easy living in the shadow of a literally Son of God, Biff still lives a relatively normal life hanging out with his bff. The story documents the age old tale of Christ, but from a different perspective. It’s interesting, fresh, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY YOU WILL LAUGH OUT LOUD.
Side note, I feel like C.Moore has definitely sculpted me as a writer, so if you like my writing, you will probably fall in love with him. Also great reads by C.Moore, A Dirty Job and Bloodsucking Fiends.

Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris
Boy oh boy, David Sedaris. Quickly becoming one of my favorite authors, he creatively pairs wit and beautiful craftsmanship to weave his stories. If you aren’t a fan of satires, you might not like his writing, but Me Talk Pretty One Day is pretty tame, so I think it would appeal to a lot of readers.
Me Talk Pretty One Day is a collection of short stories about his life growing up, from battling his lisp to being broke in NYC to moving to France and hating every second of it. Hm, maybe I just really like books about the hardships of living in France. Anyways, it’s a quick read. The book itself isn’t too long, but it’s fun! I haven’t read any other books by Sedaris, but I’m excited to explore more of his work.

The Broke Diaries by Angela Nissel
If you like reading diaries, then you’ll enjoy this one. The book is actually a compilation of the author’s online diary she kept as a struggling and broke college student #beenthere. Because it is a diary, the voice and writing is very unique to the author. Also, we’ve all experienced the choice between eating and paying the electric bill, and it’s hilariously relatable. If you haven’t, then lucky you, but it’s great either way.
I haven’t read anything else by Nissel, so no recommendations there. If you want other funny memoirs, check out The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. Actually, can I just add The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae to this list? It’s a brilliantly funny book.

It’s Only the Himalayas by S. Bedford
Now, you guys didn’t think I would leave ya hanging without a great travel related recommendation, did you? The full title is actually It’s Only the Himalayas: And Other Tales of Miscalculation from an Overconfident Backpacker, and that basically sums up the entire book. The story follows two characters, Sue and Sara, on their backpacking adventure through African safaris, partying in Asia, and of course, trekking the Himalayas.
You can imagine all the possible things that could go wrong in that scenario.

But also, these are my honest suggestions and I fully recommend everything from my own experience.
I haven’t read any of those titles yet, but I did fall in love with the book “Dirty Jobs” back in college. I’m definitely adding “It’s Only the Himalayas” to my reading list. Thanks for the suggestions!
Ah yes, Dirty Jobs is one of my favorite C.Moore books! Do you have any recommendations! I like your tastes!
Sorry, I just saw your reply! I haven’t read many books like “Dirty Jobs,” but I’m just finishing up a really great YA book called “We All Looked Up” by Tommy Wallach. It’s about four teens from Seattle who cross paths in the midst of an asteroid heading toward earth. Somewhat apocalyptic. It’s a pretty comical book, but also thought provoking. Another good one one of my all-time favorites – is “Post Birthday World” by Lionel Shriver. It’s not a funny book, but it’s extremely well written and interesting. It’s about a woman who is married but one day decides to kiss another man. The story then merges off into two different universes – one where she stays with her husband and one where she is ends up with the other man. You get to watch how each life paths end up, with similar time markers along the way such as 9/11 and other major events. Anyways, happy reading, and keep sharing your book reads! 🙂
I LOVE David Sedaris, I’ve read some of his earlier books (Me Talk Pretty One Day, When You Are Engulfed In Flames, Dress Your Family In Corduroy and Denim) but not his new stuff.. I’ve heard mixed reviews. Thanks for the list, will have to check some of these out!
I must read “A Year in Merde.” Thanks for the recommendation. France + laughs = A book I have to read.
Oops. “A Year in the Merde.” I just put it on my list. Thanks, again.
it is SOOOO TERRIFIC!!1 Happy reading!
