Although I rarely wake up for it when I’m at home, I LOVE eating breakfast in other countries. Mostly because it’s just another meal that I get to enjoy. But also waking up early to see the sites blah blah. And lemme tell ya, food in Japan is amazinggg, and you should start eating as SOON as possible. So to help you out on that quest, I’ve rounded up 8 places that have some of the best breakfast in Tokyo!
If I’m being honest, I wasn’t expecting much in terms of breakfast meals. In most of the anime I’ve watched, the characters would be running late to school and barely have time to grab a slice of toast as they jetting out the door. But, I was pleasantly surprised during my trip! Not only did I eat some of the best breakfast in Tokyo, but there was also a huge variety of cuisine as well. This list will sprinkle in a little bit of everything, from traditional Japanese breakfast items to way on down to tha dirty SOUTH (USA).
That said, I went to Japan for a week (specifically Tokyo) way back in 2016, before I had a travel-focused Instagram or even a blog. Needless to say, my pictures sucked. So along with the help of a few friends, I bring to you today the Best Breakfast in Tokyo!
A Happy Pancake

Location: Japan, 〒150-0001 Tokyo, Shibuya City, Jingumae, 4 Chome−9−3 清原ビル B1F
Ophelie from Limitless Secrets
If you love sweet food, fluffy pancakes are one of the yummiest foods you can eat in Japan. Also called soufflé pancakes, those big and airy pancakes are typical from here. As they are very popular, you will find a few different places that offer them in Tokyo, but one of the best breakfast in Tokyo that offers them is at A Happy Pancake.
They make the most delicious and fluffy and moist pancakes! You can choose different recipes in their menu. The classic one is served with whipped butter, but you can also get them with seasonal fresh fruits, strawberries, chocolate, tea milk, matcha…literally, an endless amount of flavors. Those pancakes are so big that you will be full after eating them! Inside the café you can actually look at the process of pancake making as this part of the kitchen is open.
In A Happy Pancake, everything is fresh. Because of that, they can make only a limited quantity of pancakes every day so do not come too late!
Soul Food House

Location: Japan, 〒106-0045 Tokyo, Minato City, Azabujuban, 2 Chome−8−10 Patio6F
While this family-owned restaurant is amazing ANY time of the day, you really have to check out what they’re whipping up for brunch. If you’re missing a bit of Southern comfort lovin’, Soul Food House has one of the best breakfast in Tokyo.
With a brunch menu featuring the iconic specialties such as shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles, and biscuits and gravy (am I the only person seeing the pattern of complimentary items? 2-for-1!!), there are delicious choices for everyone in your food party! Plus, there are even vegan and vegetarian options. It’s also one of the best Black owned restaurants in Tokyo!
Tsumugi Cafe

Location: 3 Chome-15-1 Tsukiji, Chuo City, Tokyo 104-0045, Japan
I actually got this recommendation from Paolo fromTOKYO on YouTube (thanks homie!), and it definitely lived up to expectations. It has a classic Japanese breakfast menu, buuut they actually only do a set number of meals a day (I believe 100). Once they sell out, they’re OUT.
Kind of like a lot of BBQ restaurants in the US!
Anyways, back to the best breakfast in Tokyo. I would recommend getting their 18 dish sampler meal, so you can try a lot of different traditional Japanese breakfast items. There aren’t a lot of places in Tokyo that offer such a variety of Japanese breakfast items, so this should definitely be on your list!
Royal Coffee Shop

Location: 1 Chome-39-7 Asakusa, Taito City, Tokyo 111-0032, Japan
Often, breakfast cafes in Japan are usually pretty pricey and have smaller-than-expected portions, but Kisaten packs a lotta food into it’s reasonably priced plates! At first glace, the building is unassuming, but once you step inside, the spot offers warm (I visited in the winter), spacious, and comfortably seating.
They have a lot of great and tasty breakfast bites that won’t leave you feeling too full or bloated. And best of all, since it’s a cafe, you can pair it with a nice steaming cup of coffee – or tea if you hate coffee like I do haha. I personally recommend their hot minced meat sandwiches. Start your day off RIGHT!
A Bientot

Location: Japan, 〒150-0043 Tokyo, Shibuya City, Dogenzaka, 1 Chome−12−2 渋谷エクセルホテル東急 25F
If you want to get real fancy, head to Shibuya Excel Hotel for one of the best breakfast in Tokyo – AND it comes with a great view. Located on the 25th floor, it’s a very classy spot, perfect for the start of a birthday or anniversary! It lowkey reminds me of when I had high tea in Dubai at At.Mosphere.
You can order a la carte, which is divine, OR you can stuff your face at the breakfast buffet. Either way, you can’t go wrong. The real show stopper will be the view, and sometimes on really clear days, you can even see Mt. Fuji in the distance!
Cafe Mimosa (ミモザ)

Location: 4 Chome-38-6 Asakusa, Taito City, Tokyo 111-0032, Japan
Ready for more tall fluffy pancakes? Cafe mimosa is pretty low-key, especially when it comes to Japanese cafes in Tokyo. Their drink menu has all of the usual crowd favorites, in-house roasted coffee, black and green teas, milk teas, and fresh orange and grapefruit juice.
Aside from the 5-pancake tall towers that they sell, their breakfast is pretty light as well, with scones and small pastries to munch on. It’s great for people who really just want a quick bite and coffee before heading out, and it’s right on the corner of a lot of great shops in Asakusa.
Tojan Seikatsu

Location: 1 Chome-20-3 Nishigotanda, Shinagawa City, Tokyo
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Taiwan has some of the BEST food in the world. I miss eating in Taiwan every day, especially after taking a Taipei Food Tour. So, needless to say, I was pretty stoked to find a traditional Taiwanese breakfast spot while in Japan. AND, because it’s Taiwanese, it’s easily one of the best breakfast in Tokyo.
You can pick up a lot of mouth-watering breakfast breads and milk-based bowls. I honestly forgot what the bowl was called, but it’s their specialty. Word to the wise: GET IT. It’s another restaurant that can get a bit busy, so I’d recommend getting there early before the bread sells out!
SIC Cafe&Bar

Location: 5-16-2 Megurohoncho, Meguro-ku, Tokyo
Specializing in “takeaway,” SIC is one of the best breakfast in Tokyo when you’re on the go! With a walk-up coffee stand, you can even get your fix without stepping into the actual restaurant! Super fast – and equally importantly, super affordable!
If you do have time to sit down, then you’ll love the bright interior and friendly staff. Order up on of their fluffy omelets, which comes with a spread of glazed bacon, salad, and baguette bread. Plus, since it IS a Sicilian restaurant, SIC has the best dolce to pair with your drip coffee.
World Breakfast Allday

Location: 3-1-23-1 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo
And last, but certainly not least, WORLD BREAKFAST ALLDAY! It’s probably one of the most famous places to get the best breakfast in Tokyo, and usually has a line out of the door to get in. If you’re looking for a western-style breakfast, this is the place to go.
When I say Western, I don’t just mean American either. They have French breakfasts, Mexican breakfasts, English breakfasts (wow, say breakfasts three times fast), and every month or so they usually switch which countries are on the menu. They even throw in breakfasts from other Asian countries as well.
They have two different locations, which have two completely different menus. So you can visit both and have a completely different culinary experience!
Best Breakfast in Tokyo: Conclusion
Yooo, now I want to go to sleep just so I can wake up and eat fluffy pancakes and sweet bread. Overall, Japan had some pretty cool morning food options! I think in terms of best breakfast in Tokyo, all of these restaurants are excellent choices because of the inviting staff, delicious food, and proximity to a few other cool things in the area!
If you have more than a few days in Tokyo, I’d highly recommend you trying each of these restaurants, both to taste traditional Japanese breakfast items, as well as just some of the best breakfast in Tokyo IN GENERAL. Because, after all, like any major city, there’s a lot of variety in the cuisine! Plus, there’s enough restaurants to try a new one every day in a 5 day Tokyo itinerary!
