Oh beautiful, intricate, CHAOTIC, Marrakech. My 2023 trip to Morocco was my first experience in the both the country and the continent, and I am eternally grateful to have started my journey in the city of Marrakech. In total, we spent 3 days in Marrakech, and while we packed a lot of activities into those days, some of my favorite memories were settling back into our riad to relax and decompress. Riads are the lodging of choice in Morocco, and a must stay for visitors, but there are literally hundreds upon hundreds of options. Don’t worry, you won’t have to spend weeks sifting through each one, I’ve compiled a list of some of the best riads in Marrakech!
“Wait…but wasn’t this your first trip to Morocco? How would you know….”
FIRST OF ALL!!!! You are correct hahah. I only spent a total of 10 days in Morocco, and while I had two separate stays in Marrakech, I couldn’t possibly have enough intel to be able to determine the best riads in Marrakech. At least not enough to personally recommend them.
SO – I asked my fellow travel experts to chime in on their tried and true riads in Marrakech! Plus, it’s always useful to consult other opinions because not everyone travels the same. Some folks love luxury. Some just need a safe place to lay their head. The presence (or lack thereof) of certain amenities might be a dealbreaker for those who like to stay in. A few need complete silence to sleep, and others want to feel the pulse of a city. Things like budget, time, and access needs vary from person to person, so it’s helpful to get a wide range of recommendations to fit every travel style!
So, without further ado, let’s help you get the lodging for your trip booked with these charming riads in Marrakech!

Riad Esmeralda
Well I GOTTA start off this post with one of the best riads in Marrakech – THE ONE I STAYED IN! So while it’s true I’ve only been to Marrakech once, I actually stayed in this riad twice: once at the beginning of the road-trip and again at the end. I am pleased to report that the service, hospitality, and amenities were excellent both times!
Riad Esmeralda is as stunning in person as it is in pictures, with a beautiful statement pool in the center of the courtyard. Unlike most riads in Marrakech, Riad Esmeralda also has an elevator, making the upper floors more accessible to those with mobility concerns and/or large suitcases.
Outside of providing stunning backdrops for photoshoots, Riad Esmeralda is on the opposite side of the medina than most of the other riads in Marrakech, so you can experience a slightly different (but still charmingly chaotic) side to the city if you’ve visited before!
Riad Les Jardins Mandaline

Riad Les Jardines Mandaline is one of the best Riads in Marrakech, especially for folks adhering to a more reserved tighter budget. It is located in the bustling old town of Medina. Once stepping through the doors of the Riad, the atmosphere is filled with beautiful silence and serenity. It is truly a safe haven from the busy streets of Marrakech.
Upon arrival, the friendly team will bring your luggage to the room and treat you to tea and cookies. The rooms are beautifully decorated and very large and modern. But the true highlight of the Riad is the relaxing pool area. Beautiful lounges and colorful pillows make it a cozy place to rest and relax. To help with relaxation, Riad Les Jardines Mandaline offer traditional hammams, massages and scrubs in the spa (for an additional charge starting around $40 USD).
The team can also help plan daily excursions in and around Marrakech, as well as arrange transfers for said tours. If you don’t feel like heading out on the town, the riad also serves delicious and traditional food from their onsite restaurant, and sometimes host live music in the courtyard.
Riad Jnane Tamsna

If you are looking for quiet luxury, then Riad Jnane Tamsna is one of the best riads in Marrakech. Located a short drive from the city, you can leave the hustle and bustle behind and experience true Moroccan relaxation. The decor has the personal touch of the best interior designer, but it was also designed with children in mind as well and is 100% family friendly.
Riad Jnane Tamsna has some of the most interesting curated activities for guests, ranging from camel rides in the desert, to on-site tennis coaching, to even magic and calligraphy classes for children (and adults!).They also host a range of rich cultural experiences as well. Riad Jnane Tamsna is a popular riad for events due to its beauty and space, so if you’re looking to get married on your trip to Morocco, this is the perfect venue!
It is one of the larger riads in Marrakech, with twenty-four guest rooms spread between five houses, and the beautiful spacious grounds (9 acres!) are large enough for an afternoon stroll without even leaving the property.
Riad Kamal

Riad Kamal is conveniently located and easy to access from the main gate of the medina in Marrakech. Most riads in Marrakech are extremely accommodating, and the Riad Kamal staff will even wait for guests at the medina’s main gate to help guests navigate to the riad. The check in procedure is very quick and efficient so you can make the most of your time settling in.
Although the riad is off a main street, it is well insulated from the outdoor sounds. With daily housekeeping, decor is arranged to make the rooms feel more spacious, with notable great hot water pressure. The Riad features a plunge pool and a colorful relaxation area on the rooftop. One of the main draws to Riad Kamal is its convenient location, close to many restaurants serving traditional Moroccan food. The riad is also only a 5 minutes walk from the Jemaa el-Fna square and many other great attractions in Marrakech.
Riad Nesma

Similar to other riads in Marrakech on this list, Riad Nesma is a beautiful riad in the heart of the medina. The stunning building offers 10+ rooms with a courtyard in the middle. It is located right on a main alley of the medina that leads right into the central square. Along this stretch and in the square, guests can find many options for food and even some rooftop bars. The path is well lit and frequented into the evening. The riad is also just three minutes walk from a gate, where cars and vans pull up to transport guests.
Riad Nesma offers a delicious breakfast on the rooftop. They serve omelets, pancakes, cheese, olives, rolls, pastries, orange guide, and coffee. Guests can eat outdoors and enjoy views of the city. Visitors can also eat indoors if they choose. The rooftop also offers a small pool to cool off in, as well as lounge chairs. It’s a great nighttime hangout.
Rooms are a comfortable size and have well-updated bathrooms. The air conditioning in the rooms at Riad Nesma is strong, which is crucial in Morocco’s summer months. The riad also organizes guided tours in Marrakech and to neighboring cities like Essaouira and Ouarzazate.
Riad Villa Amira et Spa

Kids are welcome at the property, and you can also book family rooms.
The best part of staying here is the accessibility to sightseeing in Marrakech and relaxing with spa facilities and the wonderful indoor swimming pool! One of the useful tips to visit Marrakech is to arrange an airport shuttle to transport you from the airport straight to your lodging, and Riad Villa Amira et Spa can arrange the shuttle for you!

If you’re looking for a secluded experience, away from the hustle and bustle of the medina, one of the best riads in Marrakech to choose is Riad Terra Mia. You can enjoy the best of both worlds during your stay, whether it is enjoying a traditional tagine lunch by the private pool, or making the most of your private driver to head downtown to explore.
You will be greeted with a traditional Moroccan tea by the charming owner upon arrival, before you are shown to your room. You have an option of staying in one of the spacious rooms in the main riad building, or one of the four villas for a larger group. The Riad is decorated with traditional Moroccan paintings on the walls throughout, along with colorful stained glass windows.
The property is surrounded by secure walls and a locked gate to ensure you remain safe during your stay. If you don’t have time in your trip for an Atlas Mountains day trip, this is the next best thing! As a family-run accommodation, Riaz Luzia one of the best riads in Marrakech where you can get a feeling for the local life in Marrakech. On the one hand, it’s an extremely beautiful house with typical Moroccan interiors like colorful cushions, handwoven carpets and artistic lamps. And of course, a bright, lovely courtyard where you can enjoy your breakfast. But the true highlight is the rooftop from where you have a stunning view all over this magical city.
Besides, the local owners and staff are happy to share insights about Berber culture and sustainable travel in Morocco, all while sharing a jar of tea. They are extremely helpful and welcoming. Riad Luzia is located next to El Badii palace, and to reach Jemaa el-Fnaa square, it’s a beautiful 15-minute walk through some of the winding alleys of the medina.
They have rooms for any kind of visitor – no matter if you’re traveling as a couple or a family. A delicious, local breakfast is included, and the reception is occupied 24 hours a day. If you need transportation from the airport, they can also pick you up.

Riad Kasbah is one of the best riads in Marrakech, due to its dedication to hospitality and design. Along with staff who go above and beyond to make the guests’ trip as comfortable as possible, the stunning decor of the riad is a major highlight and a worth Marrakech attraction all on its own. From the intricate tile work to the beautiful courtyard with the swimming pool, every corner of the riad was a feast for the eyes.
Riad Kasbah is located very close to the medina, making it an ideal base for exploring the city. Despite being in a busy area, the riad was surprisingly quiet and peaceful: once you passed the entrance, a tranquil environment awaited you. The were spacious and comfortable, with all the amenities you could need for a relaxing stay, with a special shoutout to the beautiful shower.
Something that really sets Riad Kasbah apart as one of the great riads in Marrakech is that they offer both excursions and activities for guests inside the riad. You can sign up for a pottery workshop to make a unique souvenir (and memory!), or join one of their cooking classes to bring the taste of Morocco home with you.
Riad Assakina

Riad Assakina is a peaceful haven in the heart of the Marrakech medina. Located just a short walk from the famous Djemma el Fna and the Bahia Palace, this opulent riad feels a million miles away from the bustle of the souks and square. Stepping through the door is like entering another world, with stylish Moroccan décor that expertly blends traditional furniture and art with a healthy dose of contemporary class. It’s elegant and luxurious, yet comfortable and homely at the same time. The highlight is the dipping pool in the courtyard, the perfect location to relax and read a few books set in Morocco.
What really makes this property stand out is the warm welcome. British expats Michele and Grant are the perfect hosts, with a wealth of knowledge about sightseeing and eating out in the city. The staff are super friendly and helpful too – they always know what you want before you do yourself! Dining in the riad is a must, with delicious home-cooked Moroccan food served up in the glamourous salon which in the evenings is bathed in mood lighting. Breakfasts can be enjoyed up on the roof terrace while the day is still cool – the views over the city are incredible.
Riads in Marrakech often have very small bedrooms, due to the nature of these ancient medina buildings. Yet at Riad Assakina the rooms are very spacious – some of the suites are downright enormous. Having space to move about is so important and ensures the rooms don’t get stuffy in the height of summer. The bathrooms are gorgeous too, with traditional appeal and modern amenities. The shower pressure is spot on, which is just what you need after a long day of exploring.
Moroccan Riad FAQs
But first, let’s cover some common questions people might have about riads. After all, riads are one of the unique ways visitors can experience Moroccan culture, and that may be new to a lot of folks. I certainly didn’t know anything about riads in Marrakech, or what to expect, so these are a mix of my own questions I had as well as some that my friends asked me when I returned from my trip!
What is a riad?
A riad is a traditional style Moroccan house that features either an interior courtyard or garden. Many of these traditional riads have been converted into “hotels” so guests to stay in while traveling.
Do riads serve breakfast?
Yes – it is standard for breakfast to be included in the price of a room at a riad. The riad breakfast will include coffee/tea, as well as a traditional Moroccan breakfast spread that features different jams, olives, honey, nut butters, eggs, sliced fruits and vegetables, and a variety of breads. Very filling!
Do riads serve alcohol?
Some riads might serve alcohol if they have an onsite dinner service. Note that while Morocco is not a completely “dry” Muslim country, alcohol might not be available at every restaurant.
Are riads staffed 24/7?
Most riads in Marrakech have 24/7 staff, so there is always at least one staff member available for late check-ins or answering the riad door if guests come back late. It is common for riads in Marrakech to also exchange WhatsApp numbers with guests to provide recommendations, advice, or help as needed.
Do riads have private restrooms?
Most riads in Marrakech have bedroom suites with private restrooms. There is also usually at least one restroom available in the lobby or common area so guests do not have to go back to their rooms if they are relaxing in the shared spaces.
Do riads have onsite parking?
Riads in Marrakech, and the majority of Morocco, do not have onsite parking. Since riads are located in the medina, the streets are much too narrow to allow cars to drive in, let alone have enough space for a parking lot. However, most riads in Marrakech do have a nearby parking lot that are about 90 MAD (~$9 USD) for 24hr parking. You will need cash to pay the parking attendant.
Are riads accessible?
Honestly, riads are not the most accessible lodging options for those with wheelchairs, walkers, canes, other mobility aids for disabilities. Because the riads in Marrakech are old with long histories, many of them do not have modern features such as elevators, automatic doors, or visual alarms. Even in rooms on the bottom floor, riads in Marrakech will likely still have superable barriers at the entrance to the riad (and at a lot of attractions as well).
Thankfully, it’s not all bad news. While I did not personally stay here, I’d recommend checking out Riad Tarzout. Riad Tarzout is owned by a Disabled person and specifically designed with Disabled travelers in mind, offering adapted rooms fully equipped (anti-decubitus mattress, shower chair, patient lift, mautauban chair, access ramp, grab bar), step free entrances, widened doors and hallways, and transportation shuttles to and from the airport with access ramps and straps. Their tours and excursions are also accessible!

What are the extra fees for staying in a riad?
Even if you pay in advance online (through booking/expedia/etc), you will have to pay city taxes in person and in cash for all riads in Marrakech. This will usually be around 41 MAD (~$4 USD) per person, so be sure to budget cash for that!
Can you rent out a riad for a group trip?
Yes, you can usually rent out entire riads in Marrakech for your group. Since folks usually start booking their lodgings months in advance, be sure to reach out to various riads in Marrakech at least four or five months before your trip to inquire about their group rates (if any) and availability. The earlier you reach out, the more likely you can secure one of the best riads in Marrakech!
