Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort Review: 5 Honest and Unsponsored Notes

I’m very much a city person through and through. My partner, on the other hand, loves the beach. Not the water, mind you, the actual BEACH part. He could sit and bask on the sand all day. Since I typically choose our travel destination…we usually do not go to a beach. But once a year, I like to be the world’s most accommodating partner and thoughtfully consider his travel wants for our annual anniversary trip. Considering this is a Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort Review post…it’s a bit of a spoiler already, but let’s pretend this is going to catch you by surprise.

For our anniversary, we decided to go to the Maldives. Well…technically I still decided, but what was he going to do? Say no to the Maldives?

We landed on the Maldives based on a few criteria.

  1. There was a beach
  2. We could feasibly make it happen

I’ll touch more on point 2 in the next section, but this was about the extent of thought that went into deciding to visit the Maldives. The Maldives was not some long sought-after bucket list destination of mine that I finally made a reality. That would’ve been awesome and probably very fulfilling, but my brain just doesn’t work like that.

I also don’t have travel decision paralysis where I spend months swaying between destination A or destination B. When I come across a destination I want to visit, I do not save it for a certain occasion or idealist condition to visit. If I can go, I do.

It sounds simple, AND IT IS, but there are pros and cons to that mindset as well, haha. But I’ll save that detour for another post. We decided to visit the Maldives, and goodness gracious, it was just a coincidence that it also happened to be our 10th anniversary.

So maybe it happened to be a bit of an idealistic condition anyway.

Price

This is a Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort review though, so how did we land on this particular property? Honestly, it came down to price.

The Maldives is not the cheapest destination, lemme tell you that.

One of the things that made the Maldives financially feasible for me was the amount of credit card points I had that would cover a large portion of the costs.

I have a good friend that works for Hilton and who graciousslyyy added me to his friends and family list. THANK YOU FOREVER, “R”!. For that reason, I am largely a Hilton loyalist when I travel because I have a discount on many properties. Since I hadn’t traveled internationally due to the pandemic, and Hilton hotels in the USA for my domestic travels were relatively affordable, I didn’t see the benefit in using my hotel points during the last three years of exploring domestically. I also had a massive sign-on bonus for getting the Hilton American Express card.

In that same vein, I also had a lot of flight miles that had accumulated over three years. So keep that mind that a large majority of the costs were subsidized by points and miles that I have saved for years! If you take anything from this Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort review, it is to get a travel credit card that best fits your needs and travel style!

Now, since I was loyal to Hilton and had almost a million Hilton hotel points, I knew that I would be staying at one of the Hilton properties. Since I’m being honest in this Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort review, I chose the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort because it cost the least amount of points compared to the others. The Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort was the newest property at the time, only open a few months at that time, and it cost about 98,000 points a night for an overwater villa compared to about 150,000 a night at the Conrad property for a comparable room.

My points covered the entire cost of our room for four nights at the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort. We visited in January, which is technically high season for the Maldives, so if you do not pay with points, the same room (one-bedroom overwater pool villa) runs about $1,350ish USD plus taxes and fees. A NIGHT. THAT ADDS UP!!

Our roundtrip flight was also completely covered by miles that I booked with Alaska Airlines. In cash, a roundtrip flight from Portland, Oregon to Male, Maldives will run about $1500-$2000 USD.

Like I said, get you a travel credit card and start stacking your points!

Hidden Costs

That said, while our room was covered by points, there were a few “hidden” costs associated with the trip that I would like to point out for this Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort review.

The biggest is the transportation fee. You cannot get around it. Unless you stay at a resort on Malé, then you will either have to take a boat or seaplane to your property. For the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort, it is only 20 minutes away from the airport, but the speed boat to the property is a non-negotiable $300 USD per person (roundtrip).

So…there was that.

Another is that there is no all-inclusive food plan, so the cost of food really started to add up, though I will touch on that more in the later sections. Including the transportation costs, food, and two massages at the spa (splurge lol), we spent a total of $1,491.44 USD for two people for four nights in the Maldives. So keep in mind if you stay at the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort, budget about $1,500 for two people outside of flight and lodging.

Property Overview

In general, I think MOST hotel properties in the Maldives are beautiful. I mean…it’s hard NOT to be beautiful. But the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort definitely exceeded expectations.

The property takes up the entire island, so there is no “walking into the local town” or leaving the property. It’s just you and the resort. It’s a lot different than how I usually travel, even in the few times I’ve stayed at a resort in Mexico, but it was an interesting change. At the same time though, you should know that the property is stocked with any last-minute items you could need, so trips to 7-11 for deodorant will be the last thing on your mind.

Not that you even have a choice haha.

this is a snorkeling map of the property, but you get the idea

The bulk of the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort property is located on the island, including the restaurants, spa, lobby, kid clubhouse, gym, tennis courts, and the beach villas. From that island, the overwater villas shoot out from a boardwalk on each end. There are also nearby coral reefs that guests can swim out to (if you know how to swim lol), and a protected ocean area for water activities like jetskiing and whatnot.

Each villa is equipped with bikes, so you can navigate the property pretty easily and quickly. From one end of the overwater villa boardwalk to the other side’s overwater villas took about a fifteen-minute bike ride, so it isn’t a very big property at all. You can also request a golf cart caddy you do your desired destination if riding a bike is not for you, at no extra cost (just a bit of a wait).

Overall, the property is beautiful and has a consistent “clean” and airy vibe, bordering on minimalistic. It opened in July 2022, so extremely new as far as resorts go. It wasn’t even open a full year when I visited. All the indoor buildings had strong AC and the resort WiFi was strong all throughout the property. Even from the moment you get to the Hilton waiting area outside of the airport.

I visited (mostly) during the weekdays, Tuesday-Friday, and the property was very quiet. There were only about 4 other occupied tables during meals, and the public beach spaces were empty. Not in a creepy way, it was actually quite peaceful. On that note, the weekdays seemed to be MOSTLY couples – so if you’d like a relaxing, calm, intimate vibe, I recommend the weekdays.

However, if you want a more lively environment, whether you’re traveling to the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort in a couple, with a group, or even as a solo traveler, then definitely aim to visit over the weekend. We had until midday Friday at the resort before our departure, and we could already begin to see the shift in the environment. Breakfast was busier with more visitors either dining alone (and looking to make friends) or in a fun group (and also looking to make friends). There were also more events scheduled around the property, perfect for mingling!

Room Review

Yesss the biggest draw to a fancy Maldivian vacation! WHAT DOES THE ROOM LOOK LIKE?!?! At the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort, there are a few different suite options, but basically it boils down to two types. Overwater villas or beachfront villas.

The great thing about the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort property is that every room, regardless of whether you have an overwater villa or a beachfront villa, has its own private pool! It is such a nice luxury, though I do want to mention that the outdoor pool is not heated, so make sure you ease into it haha. The pool is an infinity pool, but don’t worry there is a small ledge on the other side so you are never dangling over the ocean if you lean on the side.

For the overwater villas, there was also a netted hammock overlooking the water that you could lay down on, as well as a sun deck complete with a table and chairs, and two sun loungers. Just outside one of the doors leading in from the deck is a shower and drying rack so you can rinse off and hang up any wet swimsuits before heading inside your room.

As far as privacy, I am happy to report that the tall walls separating the villas are high enough that you don’t see your neighbors (and they don’t see you!) on your deck. However, visibility is possible if you (or they) swim out into the ocean.

I know everyone goes to the Maldives for the water (and rightfully so), but my favorite part of the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort room was actually INSIDE.

The bed is incredibly cozy, and they even have a pillow menu so you can switch out your pillow (free of charge) to best suit your comfort needs. Behind the bed is a mini-bar (NOT free of charge), as well as a desk if you need to get any work done. I appreciated that every morning and night (or really WHENEVER you request it haha) you get a new carafe of water. It is soo hot and humid in the Maldives that TRUST ME, you will need to drink more water than expected to avoid dehydration.

The detached tug is positioned in front of ceiling-to-floor windows, and the staff can even draw you up a nice spa bath (free of charge) if you request! I didn’t even know that was an option until our personal villa attendant (more on that later) suggested it to us. So just a heads up for your trip!

apologies for the thirst trap – stay hydrated out here

I appreciated that both the shower and the toilet rooms were step-free, and the shower had amazinggg water pressure. It is a waterfall showerhead, so RIP to everyone who dislikes them (me), but if you don’t then you’ll love it! The toilet has a handheld bidet so your newly waxed butthole can stay clean.

Or not waxed, do you.

Amenities

There is more to the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort than just your room though! And that’s a good thing! Personally, I wasn’t sure if I would get bored in the Maldives. I’m very much so a city person who likes to pack an itinerary with attractions and tours and window shopping.

How was I supposed to entertain myself for five days on an isolated island??

Thankfully, the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort has a good amount of amenities to keep you busy the whole time. I think four nights was the sweet spot between relaxing and being entertained by the amenities, but we didn’t stay long enough to get bored so that was nice!

Gym

The first amenity I want to point out at the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort is the gym, beause we surprisingly used it more (but at the same time less) than we expected. Less, because in our every day lives we have a pretty routine workout schedule.

I am more of a pilates, spin, and maybe one reluctant 30-min walk a week. My partner is very strength and cardio focused. So while the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort gym was fully equipped with plenty of treadmills, weights, and exercise machines…We…did not keep up that routine in the Maldives haha. We DID however, visit the gym every day because of a special perk offered every morning: yoga class! I will talk about it more later, but the yoga class was such an amazing perk to the gym and the perfect start to our day every morning!

Kids’ Clubhouse

I don’t have kids, but if you do and decide to take them with you on your trip to the Maldives, then I am pleased to report that the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort has a clubhouse specifically for kids! The staff was a little…confused on why I wanted to visit, but they were happy either way to let me take a peak inside before the clubhouse was open.

The clubhouse is a separate building located next to the breakfast building. The downstairs of the building has a few different rooms. In the main lobby you’ll find the check-in desk and two large TVs with video game consoles, as well as a long art table with different crafts and coloring utensils for the kids to use. There is also separate rooms for toddlers and tiny nap rooms that the kids can sleep in (and chairs for their parents to watch over them and catch some Z’s themselves).

The upstairs I didn’t go to because the staff was still cleaning, but it is designed for preteens and teenagers to hang out. There is also a smoothie bar up there for the older kids. I asked the staff if “non kids” could visit that smoothie bar (because I’m greedy and wanted one), and they politely reminded me that adults can get smoothies from any of the many restaurants around the property hahah.

And then outside the clubhouse is a fenced in area with fake turf, a few outdoor games, and a very shallow splashing pool. It’s all very cute and I believe they said they do have at least one full time lifeguard watching the water areas, but parents are welcome to play with their kiddos in the water with them. In the shaded turf area, there are a few items like hula hoops and soccer goals, and also an enclosed trampoline! It all looks very cute and seems like a great amenity for both kids and parents!

Aura Lounge

I am a silly bumpkin and forgot to take a picture of the actual building, but the main lounge is where you’ll find the restaurant Aura (open for lunch) and inside contains lots of seating areas (enough room for groups!) and pool tables. The outside has a large community infinity pool, a beach with volleyball courts, some water swings, and of course an outdoor shower with towels if you need to rinse the beach sand off.

In the afternoons, they often had a DJ spinning music, and at nights they hosted events like movie nights and mixers for mingling. It’s a chill spot!

Sport Courts

If you’re a very active sports person, the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort has large sports courts, for tennis and soccer! I didn’t last long out here, because there isn’t much shade and…the Maldives is very humid with a very strong sun, but it was nice to kick a ball around for a little bit. It’s free to rent.

Food & Drink

Now for all things food and drink at the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort, let’s start with the first meal of the day: BREAKFAST! Breakfast at the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort is a $100 USD a day breakfast buffet with both Maldivian/South Asian breakfast items and western breakfast items. A lot of the food was self serve, but there were also made to order items like omlettes and whatnot. Because I am a Hilton Diamond Member, the breakfast buffet was free for us!

Again, it pays to be loyal! We saved $400 USD!

Breakfast was incredible. Maldivian food is delicious. It was also nice that breakfast came with a view – though on windy days, it’s a bit nicer to sit on the inside haha. My favorite part of breakfast was the juice counter, with freshly squeeze juices and a rotating special flavor every day. Even if I were stuffed, I made sure to grab a few goodies from the pastry room (YES there was an entire ROOM for all the pastries) before we headed out.

Since breakfast was included in our stay (#HiltonDiamondMemberPerks), we wanted to STUFFF our faces as much as we could toget us through the day because…babyy…the food at Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort is not cheap. Which brings us to our next meal.

Lunch.

We actually only ate lunch twice after our first lunch (pictured below), we quickly learned how pricy food was. At Aura, a lunch restaurant, we ordered a Tempura Roll ($32 USD), Fish Tacos ($34 USD), and a Bikini Sandwich ($39 USD) to share. A bottle of water was $8 USD. It was all super delicious, but…it adds up quick. Plus the 10% service charge. Plus 16% tax.

So, in lieu of lunch, the other two days we learned to gorge ourselves at breakfast and nap through lunch. It was actually a win-win because we saved money AND we skipped the hottest part of the day. Y’all. I was not prepared for how hot it was going to be in the Maldives.

But I digress.

Breakfast fuel can only last for so long, and even tho we napped, we would’ve starved if we waiting until dinner for our next meal. Thankfully, every day 3-4pm, there was another #HiltonDiamondMemberPerk in the form of a free drinks & bites happy hour at the Sip cocktail lounge! It certainly isn’t enough to replace a full meal, but they do give you a few handful of snacks and all you can drink (!!!!) cocktails and mocktails, and the menu changed every day!

And then, of course, there was dinner. There are a few different dinner restaurants like Origin, Beach Shack, and Habitat. We ate at Origin for our anniversary dinner and the staff was super cute and decorated the table for us. I don’t have great pictures because it was very late and the sun had set (we were dining on the deck) so it was too dark haha. But it was delicious!

Pictured below are the scallops I ordered at Beach Shack for another dinner! Again – delicious. If you do one thing at the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort, make sure you eat all the seafood you can!! Since we are a two appie two entree and maybe a dessert kind of couple, our bill ran about $100-$150 USD per person for dinner.

Free Activities

Yes. The food adds up and unfortunately at the time of my booking, there was no all-inclusive option at Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort. But thankfully there are plenty of free activities as well! With the exception of the spa, we ONLY did free activities. It’s one of my biggest budget tips for the Maldives!

The first and perhaps the most obvious free activity at the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort is to…hang out at the beach. I am personally not a beach person, so I didn’t do much of this, but my partner did his lil splish splash for a while and I waited for him under the shade of a nearby palm tree. The water at the property’s beaches are very calm because they are protected from the waves. You’ll also see a few schools of fish swimming around which is fun, and brings me to my next point.

Snorkeling is another free activity at the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort! Head over to the water activity building (I’m sure there’s an official name but I’m too lazy to look it up haha) to get fitted for flippers and snorkel mask. They’ll even drop it off at your villa for you.

I am not a water person and my partner is not an open ocean person…so we didn’t actually end up using the snorkel gear lol. But it is free!! And we saw a handful of people out and about snorkeling, so it’s a good activity if you like water, swimming, and marine life – my personal three top icks haha.

Other free activities at the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort included events hosted by the resort. For example, there was a movie night which was something fun and different! Other events were a Disco Party, Milkshake classes (for teenagers), guest bands, and regular DJ sets at aura.

We didn’t stay overnight on the weekend at the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort (we left on a Friday), but that day there was like a world-famous yoga instructor flying in for a large group class as well as a guest mixer that night which sounded pretty cool.

Hands down, my favorite free activity at the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort was the free yoga classes every morning. Yoga originated in South Asia, specifically Northern India over 5000 years ago, and lemme tell you. Yoga hits DIFFERENT here.

I’m a very casual yogi, like…very basic stuff. But the instructor here pushed me in a way that was both encouraging and firm, like a teacher who pushes you to be your best.

Well, I suppose he was exactly that.

Class was every morning at 6am (or it might’ve been 7, I forget) which was perfect because it was just after sunrise and the heat hadn’t set in yet. The class was out on the deck of the gym and looked out to a nice patch of beach. Then we could head back to our room, shower, then head straight to breakfast!

Paid Activities

There are also a lot of paid activities at the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort, like cocktail classes ($120 USD per person), spirit tastings ($120 USD per person), and different water activities and excursions like jetski rides ($125 USD pp for 20min), flyboarding lessons ($200 USD pp), wakeboarding ride ($80 USD pp for 20 min), catamaran sailing ($160+), SUP & canoes ($40 USD pp for 30 min), and different snorkeling, diving, and fishing excursions.

I can’t tell you about any of that tho cuz I didn’t do any.

Alas, I am repulsed by water.

BUT I did splurge on one activity. Since it was our anniversary, we each got spa packages.

My partner got a deep sports massage and a pedicure while I got a traditional hammam massage and a manicure. Both of our masseuses were fantastic, super friendly and even more skilled. Also, they use vegan nail polish which was cute! But…also does not hold up very well in water so just a heads up that it won’t last long haha. I don’t remember exactly how much each itemized spa treatment was, but in total for both of our services (2 massages and 2 nail services) we spent $638 USD.

Also, I realized I just lied. We did have one other paid activity at the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort. It was for one of my favorite activities – high tea!

In the Sip lounge, the same place that hosts free happy hour for Hilton Diamond members, we had their afternoon high tea for $49 USD. It included a wide variety of snacks, tea sandwiches, and of course a pot of tea. The Sip lounge also has board games, so we sipped our tea over a heated game of Monopoly. Since we skipped lunch that day, it evened out on costs haha. I did unfortunately lose at Monopoly tho.

Actually actually – I lied twice. The third paid activity I did at the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort was…less of an activity and more of an experience.

I ordered a floating breakfast.

It is $100 USD.

It…is not very great taste-wise. In fact, it is the only unimpressive meal I ate at the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort. And, by the time you finish taking all of your pictures – because let’s be real, you only get a floating breakfast to take pictures with it – the food is cold. If you’re not into taking pics just for the sake of it, then I would not recommend it. Eating in a pool is cold anyway. However, for some folks (myself lol) we just gotta do it for tha gram. Or in this case my blog haha.

Staff

And lastly but certainly not leastly, the staff at the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort. They truly make your stay so unforgettable. And I mean, for the PRICE, it makes sense that they do!

Each villa is assigned a specific room attendant that is essentially your personal contact for anything you may need during your stay. If you don’t have WhatsApp, I recommend downloading it because it is the easiest form of communication for them. Each morning, our room attendant texted us the morning schedule for the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort and would make any dinner or activity reservations we wanted.

Everything was so personalized for our stay at the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort, which was such a cherry on top of an already bucketlist trip. Outside of our attendant, every staff member we came across was extremely welcoming and friendly and I only have great things to report on that front. I appreciate the level of care and detail that each and every one of them bring to work. It is noticeable!

Thank you to the wonderful staff and crew – especially those behind the scenes as well <3

Conclusion: Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort Review

And that’s all I got for this Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort review, thank you so much for reading! I always feel weird writing reviews, because I want to make sure I remember all the details, so hopefully you were able to get a good feel for the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort. The Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort, and the Maldives in general, definitely exceeded my expectations and isn’t at ALL “overrated” in my opinion.

I don’t say this about many beachy/water destinations, but I would go back! I…would just need to save up my points and miles again because I can’t imagine a time in my life when I would be able to afford this out of pocket hahaha.

And on that not, make sure to bring your own sunscreen, because it is no joke $29 USD plus tax at the property. Oh, and a nice UV blocking umbrella if you are sensitive to sun exposure. 1. Based on your experience at Hilton Amingiri, would you still recommend staying there for 4 nights or shorten the trip by a day?

Our thing is that we are adventurous, like to be on the move from morning to night, but since we will be on an island for the entire trip, I don’t see that many activities to do that will keep us from being bored quickly.

    1. I am similar and I thought 3-4 nights was a solid amount of time for me to relax without getting BORED OUT OF MY MIND. However if you are not a fan of watching tv, reading, doing yoga, etc, and not interested in the activities offered by the resort then I would suggest picking a less isolated resort honestly.

  2. Did you tip while on property, or is all that covered with the service charge?

    1. Tip is not included in the service charge! Unfortunately this is something I hadn’t thought about before, so whenever I ate at lunch and dinner I would include a tip, though I wish I had brought $5 and $10 USD bills for tips for the helpful staff around the resort.
