Studying abroad ain’t cheap. As a woman in STEM, I have a special interest in trying to inspire other young people in STEM to also study abroad. I previously wrote an article all about all the benefits of studying abroad as a STEM student, so here I am to walk-the-walk. Once you’ve decided to do it, you might need a bit of help in the financial department. I’ve compiled a list of study abroad scholarships for STEM majors, including internship opportunities!

As for scholarships, I will be sub-categorizing them to help you filter through a bit. I will be continuously adding more as I come across them, and trying to keep this list updated as best as I can. If you know of a scholarship to add to this list, please drop it in the comments below!
Also as a side note, since I live and studied in the US, most of the scholarships I find will be study abroad scholarships for STEM students in the US. I’m not really knowledgeable in how study abroad programs work for citizens in other countries, but feel free to suggest resources for non-Americans as well!

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergrads who are receiving the Federal Pell Grant.
Study Abroad Scholarships for STEM students at a UC university
If you are a current STEM student at a University of California school, then you’re in luck! There are a number of scholarships available for you!
Boren Scholarships
There are a couple of different scholarships you can apply for, but they have a scholarship SPECIFICALLY for STEM students studying abroad over the summer!
Fulbright – mention Sojo
Internships and Research for STEM Majors
Internships and research opportunities are another great resource for taking your education abroad. It is one of the best resume boosters too, as it gives you global experience and perspective in your field!
Thomas Jefferson Research Fund
This travel grant is for collaborative research in multiple STEM projects that focus on hot topics in global challenges.

And hey, sometimes you just gotta make it work whatever way you can. If you have a bit more flexibility and aren’t restrained to a set study abroad program, here are a few more options that may be available to you!
Take a Year of Physics over the Summer : UC students only
In this summer intensive program, you can get your physics credits out of the way (usually 1 year for most STEM degrees) in just one summer! In another country! The best part is that the classes are taught in English, so there’s no language barrier there! With this program, you can study in Australia, Cyprus, Ireland, Hong Kong, England, Scotland, or Spain! Only open to students in the UC universities.
