As a Black American who loves anthropology and learning how various cultures impact (and are impacted by) a destination, I’m always curious what that looks like from a Black perspective. The easiest way to do that, of course, is through food and thus I set out to check out the plethora of Black owned restaurants in Hong Kong.
There was only one problem.
There…was not a plethora of Black owned restaurants in Hong Kong.
Truly, I was shocked.
1 – Hong Kong is THE foodie capital. There is food from all over the world, and it’s amazing. It has one of the highest concentrations of Michelin starred restaurants and multiple eateries on every corner.
2 – there are Black people in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is one of the most diverse cities in Asia, a lot of that attributed to its multicultural history but also it is a city currently drawing in people from all over the world. Naturally, that includes Black people too.
So…where are the restaurants? I mean, I found Black owned restaurants in Tokyo where there is a heck of a lot less diversity. There was obviously something…going on…but in my recent short 4 days in Hong Kong, I didn’t have enough time to really investigate.
But I did have enough time to eat what I could.
Despite not finding as many Black owned restaurants in Hong Kong as I was expecting, I did find a couple. Emphasis on a couple. The biggest struggle I found is that so many of them were closed and Google Maps had not been updated, so just a heads up if you visit and try to find new spots (or want to revisit past ones that may have closed).
Ghana Locals
This is the first spot I went to, and it can be a little hard to find. Don’t worry, if you’re walking down an alley, you are going in the right direction. It’s in an indoor international shopping center, so you’ll see a lot of booths offering currency exchange (I was finally able to exchange my Pakistani rupees lol), grocery stories with specialty items, and of course international cuisines that don’t often see themselves on a bigger stage.
Naturally, this is where Ghana Locals finds its home! The food was very affordable with seating, though just a heads up it also seems like people hang out in that corner of the market so just a heads up that some seats might be taken by folks chilling haha. This was also my first time having Ghanaian food, so that was really fun.
Afrika Kitchen Hong Kong
The second of the Black owned restaurants in Hong Kong also specializes in African cuisine, but a wider West African approach. It’s nearby Exit C of the Yau Ma Tei MTR Station, but the location is accurate on Google Maps so shouldn’t be too difficult to find. There’s only a few tables and seats, but even if there’s a wait, it’s well worth it.
It’s a very homestyle restaurant and Chef Anita cooks everything fresh to order without overly flashy frills but ALL the flavor. If you’ve never had West African food before, then no pressure, Chef also can give a breakdown of the dishes and give recommendations. I appreciate her taking the intimidation away from someone who may not be familiar with the cuisine.
Moreso though, they also occasionally host events, catering, and travel consulting to African destinations. Trust me, you’ll be ready to book a vacation after eating here!
Africa Coffee & Tea*
Another spot I want to highlight but technically isn’t Black owned, is Africa Coffee & Tea (or ACT for short). ACT is mainly a cafe, with a fantastic menu of single origin African coffee mind you, but they also are a meeting up for the African community, and those who appreciate African culture like the owner.
They host multiple events throughout the year (put on by a variety of people and/or organizations) themed around celebrating and uplifting African culture. While I didn’t get to visit myself, recently ACT opened a sister property Africa Coffee & Tea House (ACT HOUSE), an African contemporary arts-focus vibrant multi-functional lounge & lifestyle space across the corridor of our cafe space.
Along with that, the cafe itself has a great view and regulars who will welcome you with open arms. All great spot!
African Center Hong Kong
Last but not leastly, there’s the African Center Hong Kong. Okayyy, technically it’s not a restaurant-restaurant, but I’m including it in this list of Black owned restaurants in Hong Kong because they do host a lot of events that center food (like community BBQs) and where you can get a taste of African cuisines.
That said, they also have non-food events like book clubs, craft workshops, board game nights, and even Chungking Mansion tours to give context to what this place means for residents and Africans in particular. It’s such a great bridge between the African community, other immigrants, and Cantonese residents (and of course visitors!).
Conclusion
Alright folks, and that’s all the Black owned restaurants in Hong Kong that I was able to find during my trip. If you know of any more that are still in operation, please let me know in the comments below!
Yanno, I was really expecting at least some other Black restaurants from the diaspora to make an appearance but hey, maybe by my next trip to Hong Kong. In the meantime, feel free to grab a bite at some of my other favorite restaurants in Hong Kong.
