I can’t believe it’s been almost ten years since I was in Macau doing the Macau Tower Skywalk. That is…mind-boggling to me right now. I’m sure it’s mostly because of the pandemic timewarp that makes it feel like it’s barely 2021, but also because it doesn’t seem that long ago that I was just bumbling my way on my first few international trips.

Maybe because I’m still bumbling.

But I digress. I could walk down memory lane all day, so while we’re on a stroll anyway, one of my most memorable memories in Macau was dangling off a giant skyscraper for the Macau Tower Skywalk. This post is going to be short and sweet (hopefully), so if you’re a thrill-seeker,

Macau Tower Skywalk Details

  • costs: 788 MOP/$98 USD for adults, 552 MOP/$68 USD for children
  • time: ~30 minutes
  • minimum age limit: 3 years old
  • maximum weight limit: 135kg/297lbs

I recommend getting tickets in advance so you don’t have to wait in line and you can have your choice of timing. Not gonna lie, it’s a pricey attraction. But at the same time, you get to walk on top of a huge building. You don’t get that every day.

The cool thing about the Macau Tower Skywalk is that it’s family friendly! You can’t really strap in a baby, but most three year olds are big enough to wear their child-sized harness and can join in on the fun as well. Along with the actual skywalk, you also get to visit the tower’s two observation decks, photos and GoPro footage (quality dependent on the guide haha), a souvenir T-Shirt, and a Skywalk certificate. It’s not a bad bundle.

The Macau Tower Skywalk is open rain or shine, so if it’s dreary outside bring a rain jacket!

What to Expect

When you book your tickets, be sure to factor in the fact that you actually have to arrive 30 minutes before your specified activity starting time. This is because the observation deck can get busy, there will be others waiting for their check-in time, and you have to go through the short safety training beforehand.

Be sure to bring a verified photo ID to check in. If you are under 18 then you do need parental or legal guardian in-person authorization for minors to partake in the Macau Tower Skywalk experience.

After you’re all set-up and ready to go, the total time out on the Macau Tower Skywalk is approximately 30 minutes. This varies slight depending on weather (if it’s rainy you won’t be out as long), routine maintenance projects, or the general interest of the group.

You are NOT allowed to take your own cameras.

We got pretty lucky on our experience. Only two of us were signed up for the time slot so we essentially got a private tour of the tower! Which…normally sounds awesome, but I’m slightly weird and shy so it was…kind of awkward haha. I think I would have preferred a group to keep the energy up. The guide was trying so hard, bless his heart.

You don’t actually get “free-reign” on the skywalk and wander around by yourself. Instead, the guide literally guides you around, directing you into specific locations or to try out certain things like leaning off the side or sitting on the edge.

I…would have preferred free reign, we’re strapped in after all. But I get it, I guess. You get individual pictures as well as couple/group shots. Throughout the experience, the guide also points out sites of interests that you can see from the tower. It was sunset when we went and seeing the sunlight dim over the city was stunning. Buuut once the sun was fully down, it was harder to see some of the other sites. I did like the timing though, since you got to see the skyline change from day to night.

I was getting cold, so I believe our tour ended a smidge early, after about 20 minutes. That actually was enough for me haha. We were only two people so having the guide’s full attention FELT long, whereas if you’re in a group, it’ll take longer to get photos and videos. After safely getting back inside and our harnesses off, we had access to explore the observation decks at leisure.

Macau Tower Skywalk: Conclusion

Overall, it was a nice experience, but was it worth it? Ehh…honestly, I’m leaning on no for most people. I was expecting to be able to strap in and just do whatever, maybe take a few selfies. But that was not the case.

Again, safety is the number one priority, so I get it, but if I had known more about it, I might not have done it. BUT THEN AGAIN, how often do you get to be on the outside of a skyscraper? If you like doing things just for the thrill, then sure go for it. I think the Macau Tower Skywalk is also a super cool experience for children!

But everyone else, at a quarter of the price, you can just get a ticket to the observation deck because the view is great.

If you’re in Macau, or even in Hong Kong and want to do a day trip, I highly recommend visiting the tower. But would you do the Macau Tower Skywalk? Let me know in the comments below!
