best ethical online mexican stores to buy from

If you’re new to my blog – hi, I’m Kay. I love Mexico. Maybe I’m a bit biased, growing up in Southern California and all, but Mexico is honestly one of my favorite countries in the world. Buuut, since I can’t be in Mexico every second of my life, I’ve rounded up some of the best Mexican online stores and boutiques that you can browse for Mexican wares, decor, and clothing!

I’ve tried my best to focus this “Mexican online stores” list on small businesses, especially women-owned and operated brands. The businesses are a mix of Mexican- and Mexican-American companies, but they all are sustainably sourced and follow ethical pay structures! Yay!

I’ve divided them into categories like clothing, accessories, home decor, and whatnot, but many of them have multiple items in their shop that cross over. I’d recommend checking them all out! So without further ado – here are the best Mexican online stores to patron!

P.S. I have also included stores and shops from Indigenous artists and businesses owners. Not all identify as Mexican or Latino/Hispanic, but the Indigenous and pre-colonial culture of the land is so integral to modern Mexico that I gotta show some love! Yah just thought I’d throw that in since the title is technically “Mexican online stores.”

Clothing Boutiques

Clothing is one of my favorite souvenirs to buy abroad. For one, the pieces are usually unique in styles and designs that I wouldn’t be able to find at home. Second, they always end up being an ice breaker because people usually compliment (or just normal comment) on them! One of my favorite Mexican clothing brands is “Ay Guey!,” but for this list of Mexican online stores, I decided to feature smaller companies. Yanno, shop small and all. So these Mexican online stores are a win-win!

Miha Made: Oaxaca City, Oaxaca Mexico

Instagram: @miha_made

Miha is a clothing boutique that specializes in blending traditional Oaxacan textiles into modernized Mexican cuts and styles that embodies a relaxed living theme. All pieces are manufactured in Oaxaca, Mexico by local artisans and designers. A percentage of profits go back into supporting Oaxacan art programs, Indigenous women, and community support initiatives. I think a lot of Mexican online stores follow this set up (partnering with local artisans), but when you come across one, make sure they pay fair wages. (Like Miha!)

Mucho: Memphis, Tennessee USA

Instagram: @shopmucho

Mucho owner and founder Angelique Sloan, born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, founded her small business in part to bring more Latino style and inspiration to her new home in Memphis, Tennessee. She grew up visiting mercados with her family and embracing her Mexican-American heritage. The clothing style is fun and youthful, and range from graphic tees to more traditional dresses. Each item at Mucho is uniquely made, and it is a family-run business! It’s definitely one of the Mexican online stores from this list that I really want to visit in person! (And not just because it’s attached to a bakery heyyooo)

Mi Vida: Los Angeles, California USA

Instagram: @shopmivida

One of the main reasons I love Mi Vida is their commitment to supporting the local community. They provide a stable and supportive environment for local artists and even host a monthly art walk (yanno, when there’s not a pandemic and whatnot). Woohoo for Mexican online stores that put on events for the youth and artists! BUT ANYWAYS – back on topic. I am a huge fan of their sweatshirts and jackets, which bring me back to my days as a youngster in LA. (That said, I’m not Hispanic so I’d personally feel…like a poser wearing a “Ching*na” shirt, but a lot of their other designs are rated E for everyone).

Folklore & Tradition: Dallas, Texas USA

Instagram: @folkloreandtradition

They have the absolute CUTEST blusóns. Seriously, you will be set for summer. Jumpsuit, dresses, matching sets, you name it. Just like that, your paycheck disappears. Thankfully, there are payment options! The owner, Mariola Cabria, is Mayan from Mexico and Guatemala and she spent her childhood working and learning in markets and continues to support other women and their businesses.

Hija De Tu Madre: Los Angeles, California USA

Instagram: @hijadetumadre

I’m a big t-shirt person. It’s what I wear 90% of my life, so I appreciate a good graphic. There sizes range from XS-2XL, and have a ton of fun phrases and casual designs. The clothing feels new and yet familiar, so you can carry a bit of Mexican swag with you everywhere you go. The style embodies the complicated identity and history of Mexico, and especially Mexico’s relationship with the USA. In the words of the founder Patty Delgado, “The brand is an ode to mujeres who are unapologetically Latina.”

Accessories and Shoes

Admittedly, this is my favorite section. Well, second favorite, but we’ll get to that later. I’m usually too lazy to accessorize, but I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. Hats especially, but also shoes, necklaces, and enamel pins. Idk what it is about enamel pins but I just want every single one ever created. These Mexican online stores will have you decked out in all of the cutest hats, necklaces, purses, and shoes!

Agave Girl Boutique: Jalisco Mexico

Instagram: @agave_girl_boutique

Whewww chile, the LEATHER BAGS!!! Agave has a ton of incredible accessories, but special shout-out to their leather work and super cute huaraches! Everything is handmade by artisans, so if you like something you should get it before it sells out forever! They also have a great selection of small-batch Tehuana-style earrings, made internationally popular by famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

CoLores Decor: Coachella Valley, California USA

Instagram: @coloresdecor

CoLores Decor is a family-owned business that partners with elegant Mexican artisans and designers to bring unique and affordable Mexican wearables. One of my favorite collaborations they have is with Nayibi Mexico, a young designer from Morelia, Michoacán – seriously, her avant-garde pieces are absolutely breathtaking. I also love their one-of-a-kind hats!

La Perla MX:  Sahuayo, Michoacan Mexico

Instagram: @laperlamex

THE huaraches spot!!! La Perla MX is a slow-fashion brand (meaning they hand-make everything to order) with ethically sourced materials to bring you authentic traditional huaraches (sandals). Huaraches are only considered traditional huaraches if they are handmade with woven leather. They have styles that are both feminine and masculine, as well as kid sizes that range from toddler to youth! La Perla MX also has cute ankle accessories to match your dope new sandals!

Pachuco Supply: Los Angeles, California

Instagram: @pachucosupply

Y’all KNOW I love a good hat, and Pachuco Supply is absolutely STUNNING!!! They are literal works of art. The hats are handmade, and you have the option of buying one of their beautiful ready-to-ship hats, or even commissioning a custom hat to fit your exact dreams. Just note that the custom hats take about 4-8 weeks to make! Plus, I appreciate that they frequently fundraise and give back to their communities. While you’re deciding on the hat of your dreams, be sure to follow their Instagram for even more stunning designs.

J n L’s Boutique: Sahuayo, Michoacan Mexico

Instagram: @jnls_boutique

J n L’s IS SO FREAKING CUTE. UGH. They also have a ton of MAD CUTE huaraches. Like, that’s all you need to know. Though, the also have a few blusas bordadas; each one is handmade, though the belts are sold separately. Buuut, the size selection is limited (S-L for most things), so that’s something to keep in mind. This would also be a good time to point out that if you are unsure about the sizing for anything, especially if it falls under the “one-size fits all” category, I’ve had very good response times whenever I’ve reached out to these Mexican online stores. So A+ for customer service all around.

Artesanias Camila: Texas USA

Instagram: @artesaniascamila_culturalshop

I actually discovered Artesanias on Etsy while looking for cute hats! As I soon learned, each hat is unique, so if you see one you have to grab it! I waited too long and the hat sold out, buuut it allowed me to check out all of the other amazing accessories they offer! Like HEELED huaraches! Also, their crochet handbags are SUCH a statement, and they also have plus-sized dresses up to 3XL. WOO!

Orox Leather Co: Portland, Oregon

Instagram: @oroxleatherco

You already know what it isssss – if you want leather done RIGHT, you go to Orox. They are a family owned business and the name actually comes from the combination of the family’s past and present, Oaxaca and Oregon, and the beautiful blend that comes from both. They truly craft the highest quality leather in Portland. Period. Even visiting the store is a whole experience in itself because you get the aroma of leather greeting you at the door. It’s built to last an entire lifetime (and even beyond that), but juuuust in case of accidents, there’s also a lifetime warranty.

Home Decor

One of the easiest ways to incorporate your appreciation for Mexico and Mexican culture is through home decor! These following Mexican online stores have an amazing collection of home goods, ranging from casual throw pillows and cute planter boxes to abstract art and handcrafted furniture. I’m currently in the process of saving and looking for a home (not that it matters to any of you reading), and I’ve already started collecting little items here and there to decorate with!

MexChic: Oaxaca City, Oaxaca Mexico

Instagram: @mexchic_shop

I am more of a contemporary design person, so MexChic is right up my alley. Some of my favorite items are their bedroom collection, because I’m a sucker for blankets. I also love MexChic because their designs are on the more subtle side and can be incorporated into any aesthetic without having to redecorate the whole room to match.

Mexico in My Pocket: New York City, New York USA

Puerto Vallarta streets
Instagram: @mexicoinmypocket

Mexico in My Pocket started as a safe and encouraging space to share and enjoy the beauty of Mexico and Mexican culture. Founder, Luisa Fernanda, ensures that her brand is first and foremost about community, and thus often publishes authentic home recipes and even travel advice from community members (like this Puerto Vallarta travel guide!). BUT MORE ABOUT THE SHOP. I am in love with all of the kitchenware, especially the cups and mugs. Plus, Mexico in My Pocket has a whole collection of the best Mexican cookbooks!

Object Mexico: Tijuana, Baja California Mexico

Instagram: @objectmexico

Object is a store that cultivates brands and designers focused on preserving regional crafts and merging traditional Mexican artistry with modern aesthetics. Hands down my favorite purchase from Object has been their ceramic donkey/zebra pots, but I love all of their decor options, especially their pots and table accent pieces. They also have give-back initiatives to support their local community, ranging from projects in the arts to supplying basic needs baskets to families requiring assistance.

Vía Raíz: Portland, Oregon USA

Instagram: @ShopViaRaiz

I’ve got a soft spot for Vía Raíz, reppin’ from Portland, Oregon! The founder, Jennifer Bolaños, created the small Brick-and-Mortar as an homage to her parents’ hometown of Michoacan, Mexico. The store has a collection of modern Mexican decor – a weakness I didn’t even know I had until finding her store. The accent pieces and serving utensils are some of my favorites, but there are also one-of-a-kind art and decor available.

Update: They have since closed, but I loved them so much. Forever grateful for the fantastic home pieces I have found with them.

Lolo Mercadito: San Antonio, Texas USA

Instagram: @lolomercadito

Lolo Mercado wants to evoke the feeling of visiting a modern Mexican mercado. That means that Lolo carries a lot of items from different vendors, so you will find a wide variety of things on the site. In fact, they could fit under any of these categories. They have brands from all over Mexico and different Mexican identities, from Indigenous artisans to Asian and Afro-Mexican designers. So you’re getting a lot of different Mexican online stores all bundled up into one. Make sure to regularly check back for new items!

Alma’s Oilcloth and Chucherias: Healdsburg, California USA

Instagram: @almasoilcloth

Need a tablecloth? Alma’s has you COVERED!! I love these oilcloths because it can be a super easy way to dress up a dining room without needing to buy a lot of extra add-ons. There are tons of different fabrics to choose, anything from simple patterns and serapes to more colorful and intricate designs. One fun thing I love about Alma’s (and is actually how I came across the brand!) is their wide variety of pre-made gift boxes! I bought my friend one of their “bath and body” gift set that included horchata body oil and concha sugar scrub!

Art

This one kind of goes along with Home Decor, but just more specific. I’ve recently really gotten into following smaller artists, so here are a few of my favorite that I think could really brighten up your bare walls! Or office cubicle. Or…anywhere really! The beauty of these Mexican online stores for art is that they’re location friendly!

Since I know so many, I’m going to bullet them below!

Prints/Canvas

Not exactly under the “Mexican online stores” definition, but digital art is a store all on its own! If you need illustration or freelance artwork done, consider looking into commissioning the following artists!

Food, Spices, and Cooking

Reforma Roasters: Portland, Oregon USA

Instagram: @reformaroasters

Reforma Roasters is a coffee bean roaster company from Portland, Oregon. The founder, Angel Medina, opened a few of the best cafes in Portland, and actually began roasting coffee in his apartment as a way to raise awareness and money for DACA recipients. We love Mexican online stores that preach the good word!! The coffee beans are sustainably sourced from farmers in Oaxaca, Veracruz, Puebla, Colima, and Jalisco. Coffee producers in Latin America are especially vulnerable to exploitation, so Reforma Roasters ensures that they buy directly from the farmers themselves and maintain transparency, honesty, and ethics with their partners. Plus, the quality is amazing.

Salt & Leisure: Joshua Tree, California USA

Instagram: @saltandleisure

Not exactlyyy a Mexican online store per say, but great food info nonetheless! Chef Grecia Parra is a personal chef and food blogger based near Joshua Tree, California. If you aren’t close enough to enjoy a hand-cooked meal or cooking class by Chef Grecia, check out the amazing recipes she has posted on her blog!

MAXA Market: San Diego, California USA

Instagram: @maxamarket

I love Maxa Market because it provides a one-stop-shop for tons of ingredients and products by  Mexican and Mexican-American entrepreneurs using natural/organic ingredients. I know growing up, the only Mexican/Latino seasoning I knew was Goya, so I was so happy to be introduced to a source of different seasonings that were equally healthy, sustainable, AND don’t support blatantly racist policymakers. *cough* Anyways, find yourself some new favorite pantry items! And if you want to fall down a rabbit hole of amazing seasonings, check out this post by my friend Gerry from Dominicanabroad for 11 healthier alternatives to Goya!

Candy

OBVIOUSLY my favorite section to talk about. There are a ton of Mexican online stores that sell candy, so it really depends on what you’re looking for. If you want your favorite traditional Mexican candy items, I would recommend checking out MexGrocer. It’s not the same as the “candy house” down the street from me when I was a kid, but they have a great selection. However, one of my recent favorite pastimes has been discovering artisanal candy sold by Mexican online stores! It’s the variance in chili for me.

I even put together a whole post about my favorite online Mexican candy store small-businesses! Check them out to get your fix!

Other Supplies

Annnnd to round out the list, here are a handful of Mexican online stores that sell various items that are perfect for any bookshelf or desk decoration. They also make excellent gifts and party favors for any kind of girls’ getaway to Mexico, whether its Cabo or Cancun! Or, yanno, you could just decorate your desk at work with a million decorative candles. The possibilities are endless.

Artlexia: San Diego, California USA

Instagram: @artelexia

I first visited Artlexia back in 2018 when I spent a week in San Diego! There are tons of great knick-knacks, gifts, party decorations, small decor items, art pieces, and even artisanal snacks and gourmet condiments! Everything in their flagship store is available online, and more! They are also a sponsor for Fundacion en Via, which provides no-interest loans and education to female entrepreneurs of the Oaxaca valley region. Overall good vibes, good people, and good stuff!

Arte Es Medicina: Santa Ana, California USA

Instagram: @arte.es.medicina

At Arte es Medicina, you can find tons of stickers and postcards by Indigenous Purepecha artist Diana Morales. Their message stems (no pun intended) from the beauty of the Earth and the gifts that nature provides us. I’ve definitely grown into more of a postcard/pen pal typa person, so buying them from small artists really makes the message that much more personal. You can also email Diana for commission availability!

Chic Party Goods: USA

Instagram: @chicpartygoods

As the name suggests, you’ll find a lot of party favors here! They even have entire themed party packs with disposable plates, cups, and trinkets for table decoration! To add on to the festivities, there are a lot of great items for kids such as aprons, small backpacks, and flower crowns. It’s one of the cutest Mexican online stores for kid-friendly items!

Oh Comadre Candle: Downey, California USA

Instagram: @ohcomadrecandles

You know I love a good candle, and Oh Comadre has some of my favorite in the entire candle industry. First, they have a range of amazing scents! Of course, there are the more “mainstream” that are focused on calming or relaxing scents, as well as holiday scents. But there are also more fun scents like “Empanada de Calabaza,” a warm pumpkin candle, Abuelito Hot Chocolate, and even Vapo-Candle, when you want to take a walk down memory lane haha. The candles are handpoured with veggie soy wax! You’ll have to check back often though to snag one of their limited edition candles – the easiest way to stay on top of their product drops is to follow them on Instagram!

Mexican Online Stores: Conclusion

Obviously, actually going to Mexico is the ideal situation. BUT! We can’t always jet off to Mexico when we feel like it, eh? So when you need an extra helping of Mexico in your life, I hope these Mexican online stores can keep you company into your next visit. By shopping at these stores, you are supporting small businesses and Mexican online stores that give back to their communities. You are also using your money to tell the industry that today’s consumers care about Mexican art and traditional designs – things that the Mexican and Indigenous communities have been bullied and mocked for embracing growing up.

Not to get too deep, but I do hope that if you are Mexican and feel like you have to hide that part of yourself to “fit in” with your peers, then just know that your culture and heritage is beautiful. I hope you find a network where you can fully embrace every part of you and feel loved doing it. And I know I can’t speak to traveling as someone who is Hispanic or Latino, but if you would like more insight on that, I have a list of amazing Latino Travel Bloggers who can provide that perspective. Plus, they’re all my friends and ALL INCREDIBLE.

Now then, once you’re all shopped out and would like to actually head out into the world, I have a few posts to help you choose your next destination!
