Summer Reading List 2019

It’s summer, you’re feelin’ fine, and you’re looking for a light-hearted beach read. Don’t worry, I’m dropping my Summer Reading List 2019…well, right now! Grab an ice-cold lemonade, a beach towel, and a sunhat, because you’re going to want to be waterside for these hot reads!

Oceanic Dreams
Probably the biggest breakout beach read for this summer – Oceanic Dreams!
Falling in the category of romance, a summer CLASSIC, if you only have time to read one series for your summer reading list 2019, make sure it’s this one.
The Oceanic Dreams series is a collection of stories all taking place on the same Caribbean cruise ship, the Aphrodite. If that doesn’t scream summer read, I literally don’t know what else to show you. Each of the stories offers a new set of characters, problems, and of course – cheeky flirting. There are a total of 8 in the series (written by different authors), and they are releasing throughout the summer! So you’ll have one for each of your summer BBQs!
Ava Lee Series
For all of you mystery lovers, the Ava Lee series, by Ian Hamilton, is right up your dark and suspicious alleys. This is a long-running series (book 13 just released a few days ago), so you’ll have plenty to read!
I don’t usually expect much from crime novels, but the main character was pretty great! Ava Lee is a Chinese-Canadian forensic accountant and all-around super chick. Basically Captain Marvel without the ability to fly. Normally, I am not a huge fan of such “perfect” characters, I mean, at least Sherlock Holmes was a bit of an addict. But Ava’s character worked in these books! Also, the pace was spot on and the plot never dragged out.
My favorite part of these books were the locations. Ava Lee literally travels ACROSS the globe for her cases. She travels through tons of countries and cities, like Costa Rica, China, Italy, and even the Faroe Islands! The author, Ian Hamilton, is
Aya
This series isn’t actually a new one, and actually finished up a few years ago, BUTTT I just heard of them this year and from the get-go I knew they would be on my summer reading list 2019. It is a graphic novel, which is a great change of pace when you’re a bit to summer-lazy-dazy for long drawn-out paragraphs.
The novels (there are three) follow young Aya, a nineteen year old woman in the Ivory Coast during the 1970s. Along with her two best friends, snooping family, and nosy neighbors, Aya paints a colorful picture of lively Yop City. The books are very witty and humorous, and are more of a slice of life read than a thriller. And when you just got home from a double shift and want to relax poolside, sometimes it’s better to reach for a playful light read!
The author, Marguerite Abouet, is an Ivorian author. Y’all know how much I love books about places written by ACTUAL AUTHORS FROM THAT PLACE. And Aya is such a refreshing change of pace from war or famine or genocide. Those are important, but that is not ALL there is to Africa. Especially coming from an American point of view, our perspective of Africa is so immensely warped by biased media.
The Sixth World
Dystopian readers – ASSEMBLEEEE!!!!
The first of the Sixth World series came out last year, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Perhaps in an (unfortunately) not-too-distant future, the Earth as we know it is underwater due to a climate apocalypse. The book takes place on the former Navajo reservation, and there are MONSTERS.
It’s like Supernatural but with a hardcore indigenous monster slayer. It’s amazing. Her name is Maggie Hoskie, and in the first book, she takes on the task of finding a lost child in town. The characters are absolutely fantastic and the nod to Navajo and Diné legends and culture.
The Sixth World series, written by Rebecca Roanhorse, is the first sci-fi series I have read by a FEMALE Native American author, and can I just say – AMAZING. Come thru with that Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo/African American representation!!
